WWYD?

What would you do? I just posted a comment on another blog that I've seen in passing but don't check regularly. She was excited about being contacted by a woman in London who wants to buy 2 of her quilts for her new home in South Africa. This is a scam!! It has been all over the QuiltArt list and a couple of other lists I belong to and the circumstances and arrangements are always the same, and it's always a scam! They send you too much money and then want you to deposit the overage, then their original check bounces and you're stuck with not only the amount of the original check, but also the additional money you deposited back into their account. I hate to see anyone get taken unnecessarily but I don't know this woman and am not a regular reader of her blog. I felt bad about raining on her parade with even the suggestion it might not be legitimate. Now I'm second-guessing myself about making the comment at all.

Would you prefer to have a stranger steal your thunder by telling you it was a scam, or to just not know? That question sounds like it's loaded to be answered a specific way, but it's not. I'm honestly interested in knowing if you would rather a stranger comment or keep their mouth shut? I guess it's a little late since I've already commented on her blog, but I'm curious all the same. Any thoughts?

Don't feel bad. I'm glad for the head's up. If the check isn't legit, she won't get the quilts, or anything else!

I've sold quilts & purses via my web page before without a problem. If it turns out bogus I'll be posting the woman's name & passing it along loud & clear! Thanks!!!

I wish I could email you instead of leaving 3 comments, but since I done see your email address I will say again THANK YOU! You were right. I GOOGLED the name used by the scammer & found an Art Blog post from last August with an identical email. My she has been pregnant & going to that sister's wedding in London for a Loooong time!

I'd really like to burn this BOZO!
I've helped round up a couple of EBAY cheaters, & one child porn scum, it'd be so satifying to stop this nasty!

THANK YOU again! Never stop speaking up when it's the right thing to do!

I'd much rather know! There are just so many scams out there and many of them originate in Nigeria for some reason. It's so much better to get the word around.

I would much rather know from a stranger that cared, than nobody tell me at all. I think you did the right thing. There are times when I get emails, and I still show them to my husband, saying, how could anyone believe this?! But if it just happens that they have enough details that match up with what you are doing (like selling quilts) then sometimes it's hard to know whether its a scam or legit. Thank you for posting about this, I hadn't heard this particular new scam.

I really appreciate you all taking the time to comment. Especially Deb H. since it was her blog I was referring to! I feel much better about leaving the comment now and hope someone would do the same for me.
